Seasonal Timing: How Does a Hibernator Know When to Stop Hibernating?

چکیده
Deep hibernators that spend winter in a hypothermic coma below ground can still emerge and reproduce in spring at the right moment. A recent study shows that specific cells of the pituitary may harbor the internal calendar responsible for this.

Seasonal and Regional Differences in Gene Expression in the Brain of a Hibernating Mammal
Mammalian hibernation presents a unique opportunity to study naturally occurring neuroprotection. Hibernating ground squirrels undergo rapid and extreme physiological changes in body temperature, oxygen consumption, and heart rate without suffering neurological damage from ischemia and reperfusion injury. Different brain regions show markedly different activity during the torpor/arousal cycle: ...
متن کاملEffects of cooling on nerve conduction in a hibernator, golden hamster, and non-hibernator, albino rat.
ITTLE attention appears to have been paid in recent years to neurophysioL logical differences between mammals capable of hibernation and those that are not. Horvath (I) pointed out that certain species (ground squirrel, hedgehog, European hamster, and bat) could be cooled artscially until their rectal temperatures approached 0°C. and still revive spontaneously on being returned to a warmer envi...
متن کاملBook Review: "Loving Literature. A Cultural History"
It is widely acknowledged that emotion is deeply embedded in literary criticism. Even when we aspire to scientific analysis and objectivity, we assume that we share a love of literature. Loving Literature is a deep and fascinating exploration of this important assumption. Literary critics and professors of literature are expected not only to know but also to love their work. In the case of prof...
متن کاملDissimilarity of slow-wave activity enhancement by torpor and sleep deprivation in a hibernator.
Sleep regulation processes have been hypothesized to be involved in function and timing of arousal episodes in hibernating ground squirrels. We investigated the importance of sleep regulation during arousal episodes by sleep deprivation experiments. After sleep deprivation of 4, 12, and 24 h, starting 4 h after onset of euthermy, a duration-dependent enhancement of slow-wave activity (SWA) of t...
